Where We Create: Behind the Scenes of NC Triangle Etsiers

Welcome to our new series, "Where We Create: Behind the Scenes of NC Triangle Etsiers". Find our where we make our art and crafts, find inspiration, and sometimes, just get down and dirty!

Etsy Shop: MegRNC and Batteries Not Required

Describe the space in which you create.
I am lucky to have a bedroom in our house dedicated to my sewing and crafting. It's on the second floor of our house and overlooks our backyard, the woods and the Eno River. It's painted yellow (left over from previous owner) but it's a nice color and suits me fine right now.

What is your favorite thing about your space?
I'd have to say that first, I love having a whole room that I can dedicate to sewing. I love the fact that my husband suggested we put in a cable outlet so I can watch Ellen and Oprah while I sew. I love the two windows that look out onto our yard and the river.

How do you keep your space organized?
Ha! It's insanely hard to keep the room organized. Doesn't help that I'm not the neatest person to begin with, and that it's carpeted, which makes finding needles a pain. I am currently trying to put things away as I use them. Some of the things I've found to be very helpful are the plastic drawers in the picture above- I've labeled them (paint, patterns, adhesives, etc); having a basket that I can throw scraps of fabric in- every month or so I empty it- sort the scraps by color and put them into bins, and this pegboard to store my tools on. I also have a three drawer plastic storage thing under my sewing table and dedicate the bottom drawer to trash- I just sweep my trash from the table right and and close it.

Do you have inspiration pieces in your space? If so, what are they?
I have a bulletin board on which I post articles, clippings and pieces of fabric.

I'm waiting for my husband to finish painting my sewing room. (I can't since I'm preg.) You have a great space to foster creativity.

  2. Did you just clean, or does it always look like this? Will you come organize mine?

  3. Wow I'm so jealous of Megan's sewing room! What a bright, beautiful space. If I had a room like that I'd get more quilting done, but all I've got is a dark little space in my basement - about the size of a closet. Megan consider yourself blessed!

  4. It is just not right how clean your room is! :-) You've just inspired me to clean my craft room this weekend... maybe then I'll take pictures and pretend it's like that all the time! HA! Thanks for sharing your workspace with us!

  7. Oh ya'll, the pictures are an anomaly. I had to clean it b/c I just had a newspaper photographer over to take pictures! Rest assured it usually does not look like this. That's why I had to take pictures!! And, yeah, i do know how lucky I am.

  11. Hello! Found my way here through an Etsy thread - really enjoying these workspace posts -- I had to comment on this one because my grandmother was a lifelong sewer and quilter and often lost pins and needles in the carpet... and all of us can still hear my grandfather's voice yelling, "Doooootttttt-eeeeeeee!" when he stepped on one of them :)
